Receptionist (NOC 1414)

Receptionists and switchboard operators greet people and direct them to the appropriate person or service, answer and forward telephone calls, take messages, schedule appointments and perform other clerical duties.

Main duties:

  • Greet people, direct them to the appropriate person or service, provide general information in person or by telephone and may perform clerical duties;
  • May maintain front desk security and security access lists;
  • Answer telephones and record and relay messages;
  • Direct customers to appropriate areas, handle credit card checks, receive payments, issue receipts and deal with emergency situations.

Employment requirements:

  • A secondary school diploma is usually required;
  • On-the-job training may be provided;
  • Some receptionists are required to be bilingual or multilingual to
    perform their duties.
