Birth of a committee dedicated to the training and development of the workforce
The first labour sector committees were established in November 1996 in order to mobilize people from the various industry sectors to take action on problems related to employment development and the management and training of the workforce. Emploi-Québec was the driving force behind this mobilization. Formerly known as the Société québécoise du développement de la main-d’œuvre, it adopted a sector intervention policy in 1995.

The Comité sectoriel de main-d’œuvre du commerce de détail was created as the result of an agreement between the partners engaged in labour relations in the retail industry—the Conseil québécois du commerce de détail (CQCD) and the Travailleurs unis de l’alimentation et du commerce (TUAC)—in concert with the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail (CPMT).

The Comité sectoriel de main-d’œuvre du commerce de détail becomes Détail Québec
In 2007, the retail trade labour sector committee celebrated its tenth anniversary by changing its name and becoming Détail Québec—a shorter, easier to remember, and, above all, more dynamic name that is better suited to the retail sector.

Since its creation, Détail Québec has produced and published studies on the retail sector’s socioeconomic profiles. It also regularly organizes workforce development activities as well as information sessions designed for Québec retailers. Détail Québec has also produced reference tools to help retailers manage their human resources.

Détail Québec’s contribution to training programs
Through its collaboration with the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport, Détail Québec has contributed to the development of training programs specific to the retail sector: the Diploma of Vocational Studies (DEP) in Professional Sales, as well as the Attestation of College Studies (AEC) in Business Management, and the Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in Business Management. Détail Québec also designs training activities for the sector’s employees and managers.

The Mutuelle de formation du commerce
In 2009, Détail Québec was recognized as an accredited training mutual. The Mutuelle de formation du commerce brings retailers together and helps them meet their human resource management needs, while offering training courses to develop the skills of both managers and employees.

Plugged in to new technologies
Détail Québec is focusing more and more on new technologies to accomplish its mission and to reach more of the sector’s employers and workers who are spread across the Québec territory. A virtual retail job fair was organized in 2009 to help employers with recruiting. Online training courses have also been developed by Détail Québec to make training more accessible and attractive.

Recognizing skills acquired in the workplace
Since 2010, Détail Québec has been assessing and recognizing the skills of retail trade workers. Thanks to its Mes compétences, mon avenir program, retail sales associates and first level managers can have the experience they have acquired in the workplace evaluated and obtain certification from the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale. In addition to increasing the status of workers in the sector, this program enables them to demonstrate their professionalism, advance in their career, and take their place among the elite of their occupation. By encouraging employees to have their skills recognized, retailers show they value the expertise of their employees and contribute to increasing customer satisfaction.
